The IAEA is inviting radioactive waste management professionals to submit abstracts for the upcoming International Conference on Advancement in Radioactive Waste Management: Innovation for a Sustainable Future taking place from 11 to 15 October 2027 in Vienna, Austria. The submission deadline is 1 February 2027.
From generating low carbon electricity to supporting cancer treatment, food safety and industrial processes, nuclear technologies play a crucial role in a wide range of activities worldwide. The use of these technologies requires the safe management of the radioactive waste they generate. Decades of experience and technical advances have helped establish effective waste management practices, while ongoing innovation continues to improve approaches to waste minimization, treatment, recycling, storage and disposal.
"As nuclear applications evolve, radioactive waste management practices must continue to advance to ensure that the benefits of nuclear technologies can be realized safely and sustainably for generations to come," said Olena Mykolaichuk, Director of the IAEA's Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology Division. "By bringing together research, technological innovation and operational experience, this conference will help identify practical approaches to advancing radioactive waste management and addressing the evolving needs of Member States."
The conference will examine current practices and developments across the radioactive waste management lifecycle, including the management of emerging and challenging waste streams, advances in disposal programmes and regulatory considerations. It will bring together technical and scientific experts, policymakers, regulators, nuclear facility operators, representatives of waste management organizations, researchers and other stakeholders.
Participants will also focus on the next generation of professionals, exploring how their perspectives and the application of new technologies can contribute to the long-term sustainability of radioactive waste management.
