A man has been charged, and two people remain in hospital after being critically injured, in an alleged home invasion in the New England region this morning.

Emergency services were called to a rural property in Torrington, 65km south-west of Tenterfield, after a 75-year-old man and his 72-year-old wife, were allegedly stabbed by a man who forced his way into their home about 12.15am (Thursday 4 June 2026).

The woman suffered stab wounds to her chest while the man suffered stab wounds to his abdomen. They remain in a critical but stable condition after being airlifted to Gold Coast Hospital.

The 34-year-old man was also treated for a gunshot wound after allegedly being shot by the homeowner when he attempted to get back into the home.

He was taken by road ambulance to Armidale Hospital where he has been charged with two counts of cause wounding/grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder. He has been refused bail to appear in in Bail Division Local Court 5 via AVL later today.

Inquiries by officers attached to New England Police District indicate the younger man is not known to the couple.
