Australia's universities fully support the Albanese Government's agreement with India to introduce new rules for mutually recognising university qualifications in both our countries.
"This is a very welcome development and marks another huge step forward in our education relationship with India," Universities Australia Chief Executive Catriona Jackson said.
"India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and a very important strategic partner.
"We have huge opportunities in front of us to support India's education reform ambitions and to diversify our education offerings to serve student aspirations.
"Under the new rules, students can use their qualifications where they wish to work. This will help with skill shortages and drive deeper connections in the important areas of research and development.
"Since the pandemic, interest from Indian students in our world-class universities has soared to new heights as the country sets about educating 500 million students by 2035. We are here to help.
"As of December, almost 130,000 Indian students had chosen Australia as their study destination. The contribution these students make enriches both our nations.
"This is a golden period in our education relationship with India. We must grasp it with both hands.
"Universities back the government's focus on strengthening Australia's ties with India and we look forward to unlocking further opportunities for our economic, social and diplomatic gain."
