Join co-author of The Australian Autism Handbook: The essential guide to parenting a child on the autism spectrum Seana Smith and clinical psychologist Chloe Weekes for a conversation about autism at Orange City Library on Wednesday 5 April.

'Awareness, Acceptance + Support: Autism in 2023' marks the launch of the revised edition of the handbook, which has been updated to reflect the many changes arising since it was first published in 2007.

Orange City Council's Services Policy Committee Chair, Cr Mel McDonell encouraged parents and carers to hear about the author's lived experience of raising a child who has been diagnosed with autism.

Co-author of The Australian Autism Handbook Seana Smith.

"Come along and share your stories with someone with extensive first-hand experience and research into raising a child on the autism spectrum," Cr McDonell said.

Written by Seanna Smith and Benison O'Reilly in 2007, The Australian Autism Handbook offers support and guidance to families on their journey from early signs and symptoms of Autism to diagnosis, intervention programs, schooling, issues such as eating, sleeping and toilet training, and navigating the medical maze.

This new edition has integrated changes in the language of autism, diagnoses, society, culture and agency. It has a chapter dedicated to girls, advice from autistic adults as well as getting started with the NDIS.

The Australian Autism Handbook is a resource for families and carers of young children. It is also a useful book for teachers and for allied health and medical professionals.

'Awareness, Acceptance + Support: Autism in 2023' will be held from 5.30pm to 7pm on Wednesday 5 April at Orange City Library, supported by Collins Booksellers.

Please book your place online via Eventbrite or call Orange City Library on 6393 8132.
