Autumn Auction Ready To Roll For Lismore Buyback Homes

NSW Gov

One of Australia's most unique housing initiatives is returning this autumn, offering ten more Northern Rivers homes a second life and chance to leave the floodplain for safer ground.

In a move that combines heritage preservation with climate resilience, the NSW Reconstruction Authority (RA) has announced a new auction of 10 buyback homes in Lismore.

With no reserve price, bidding on these iconic timber structures can start at just $1, making it one of the most accessible pathways to home ownership in the country.

To date, the Resilient Homes Program has offered 160 properties for relocation with one property selling for $1 and the highest at $200,000.

PRD Northern Rivers Real Estate will manage the auction, which targets locals and renovators ready to relocate these classic dwellings to flood-free land. The auction will be held at the Lismore Workers Sports Club in Goonellabah from 5.30pm on Wednesday, 22 April 2026.

To make the transition easier, the NSW Reconstruction Authority has established a Relocation Concierge service to support buyers through the house relocation process. Houses bought in this auction will need to be relocated within 11 months to meet program requirements.

The Resilient Homes Program is Australia's largest climate adaptation initiative jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments.

Minister for Recovery Janelle Saffin said:

"We are ensuring our iconic timber homes can continue to support the hopes and dreams of a new generation.

"This isn't just about moving houses; it's about leading the way in creating safer, more vibrant neighbourhoods while taking pride in our local architectural history."

"Since becoming Minister, I set an ambitious target for these buyback homes to be relocated and am thrilled with the progress.

"This unique program is delivering on its promise to create attainable homeownership for our locals, giving ten more families the chance to grow and thrive in a home they love, on land they can trust."

NSW Reconstruction Authority Executive Director Northern Rivers Adaptation Division Kristie Clarke said:

"We have now offered 160 flood-affected homes for relocation through the Resilient Homes Program, and each auction represents real progress in reducing future flood risk for these communities," Ms Clarke said.

"By relocating homes to higher ground, we are supporting safer neighbourhoods while giving these properties a second life."
