Avoid swimming and flood waters for at least 48 hours after rain

Heavy rain, floods and storms may carry pollution into waterways. In certain conditions, our waterways and beaches can be home to disease-causing microorganisms (pathogens) or other contaminants that pose health risks to swimmers.

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) advises against swimming at all waterways and beaches for up to 48 hours after heavy rain as there could be a higher risk of illness to swimmers from increased pathogen levels. In areas of flooding, water is likely to be unsuitable for swimming for a longer period of time.

Similarly, it may not be safe to use flood water for irrigation, watering your garden, or animals.

We are installing advisory signage at Bayside's six patrolled beaches however the advisory applies along our 17kms of coastline.

The EPA is expected to start issuing beach advisory reports in the coming days.
