- Strong partnership with residential building industry vital for affordable housing
- Innovation and quality a focus of criteria for winning peak body's awards
Housing Minister Peter Tinley stressed the importance of strong partnerships between government and industry to support quality and affordable housing when addressing a Housing Industry Association (HIA) CSR Western Australian Housing Awards lunch.
During his speech to the big crowd of industry representatives, Mr Tinley congratulated all winners and finalists and spoke of the importance of industry's ongoing role in the State Government's vision for liveable and connected communities.
HIA WA is the State's peak residential building, renovation and development industry association.
Its awards celebrate excellence in WA's residential building industry across 44 categories that focus on quality workmanship, design effectiveness, aesthetics, innovation and environmental sustainability. The awards also recognise affordable housing and inclusive and accessible residential projects.
Palazzo Homes won the major award - the 2018 HIA CSR WA Home of the Year, for a project in the south-west. Other award winners included:
- WA Affordable Housing Project of the Year - Promenade Construction
- WA Liveable Home of the Year - Resonate Homes
- WA Innovation in Housing Project of the Year - Cassari Group
- WA Specialised Housing of the Year - Resonate Homes
The Department of Communities has a strong working relationship with the HIA WA, which also participates in the Housing Industry Forecast Group - a joint industry and government body set up to provide independent analysis and commentary on land and housing trends.
HIA WA is also a member of the Affordable Housing Round Table established by Shelter WA following the launch of the Department of Communities' Affordable Housing Action Plan 2017-2020.

"The calibre of the winners and finalists of these awards demonstrates the WA residential building industry's current depth of talent, creative vision and willingness to innovate.
"These awards showcase innovations in the design and construction of high-quality, visually appealing, sustainable dwellings, including affordable and liveable homes for people of all ages and abilities.
"I am confident that others in the industry will adopt some, if not many, of the innovations and approaches highlighted in today's awards and I am sure we will see these play a bigger part in Perth's evolving urban fabric as time goes on.
"Who knows, we may see some of these winning features incorporated into projects delivered by the State Government's $394 million METRONET Social and Affordable Housing and Jobs Package.
"This package, announced in the last State Budget, will see the Department of Communities partner with the private, public and not-for-profit sectors to deliver 1,390 new homes - including 320 social housing dwellings and at least 400 affordable homes over the timeframe indicated in the forward estimates.
