Many more Coffs Coast residents will be better prepared for potential flooding with $60,000 in NSW Nationals in the state government funding to reduce the impacts of floods.
Nationals Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh said the grant, awarded to City of Coffs Harbour under the 2022-23 Floodplain Management Program, will fund a critical flood risk management project.
"We know the reality of what life is like when we flood and how important it is to be prepared in order to reduce the impact of floods on our homes and businesses," Mr Singh said.
"I'm extremely pleased the NSW Government has awarded $60,000 for City of Coffs Harbour's Bonville Creek Flood Study.
"This study will provide up to date, detailed and more accurate flood mapping – a sound base for implementation of Council's flood planning controls and better informing their strategic plans for improving flood immunity."
City of Coffs Harbour Mayor Cr Paul Amos said: "Having the most up-to-date and clearest possible picture of how flooding events affect our waterways and their surrounds is vital.
"Flood studies are the first stage of the process. The goal is to provide detailed mapping so that we have the best understanding we can of potential flood risks which will help with future development, planning, community education and mitigation works.
"Later in the development of the study, we'll also be asking locals for any information they can provide - like photographs, video or flood depth markers - as they are often some of the best sources of information we have."
The NSW Government is funding the project to better understand risks and take action to reduce the impact of floods on the Coffs Coast community.
In the past decade, the government has provided approximately $165 million through the Department of Planning and Environment's Floodplain Management Program to fund more than 770 local council projects.
