Snowy Monaro Regional Council was privileged to host the second Jindabyne Community Clean-up event on Saturday 15 October 2022, which saw more than 70 people pitching in to help keep their community beautiful.

This event forms part of Snowy Monaro Regional Council's Litter Prevention Project, supported by the Canberra Region Joint Organisation (CRJO) and Sustainable Snowies partner organisations.

This ongoing initiative of Council aims to educate residents about the importance of responsible waste management and encourage everyone to help keep the Snowy Monaro clean.

Local musicians Khan and Eva Johnson provided entertainment for the morning, with the Eaton Gorge Theatre Company appearing as the Litter Cockroaches to keep the younger litter activists engaged.

There was a huge amount of litter collected on the day and we were fortunate to have assistance from the community to cart the large recyclable items and bulky waste to Jindabyne Landfill.

Litter collected on the day:

  • 2 x 240L full waste bins AND 2 x 360L full recycling bins
  • 1 x trailer of scrap metal and problem waste
  • 634 soft plastics
  • 84 plastic bottles and containers
  • 86 miscellaneous plastics, including masks, gloves, and PVC piping
  • 69 pieces of polystyrene foam
  • 133 glass items
  • 439 pieces of paper and cardboard
  • 203 cans and tins
  • 86 metal items, including star pickets and bottle caps
  • Plus: a car bonnet, hubcaps, windscreen, carpet, clothing, shoes, fencing wood, cigarette butts, e-waste, and a golf club

A big thank you to everyone from the community who helped out, to Woolworths for donating the fresh fruit, to the local cafes supporting Green Caffeen and clean-up participants with free coffee, and to the partner organisations for their support including CRJO, Sustainable Snowies, NSW National Parks and Wildlife, Thredbo and Perisher.

This project is a NSW Environment Protection Authority, Waste Less Recycle More initiative funded from the waste levy.
