Body found after unit fire in Sydney's south

A man's body has been found after fire broke out in a three-story unit block in Sydney's south today.

Emergency services were called to a unit block on the corner of Abercrombie and Ivy Street, Darlington, about 8am (Wednesday 30 August 2023), and found the building well alight.

Officers attached to South Sydney Police Area Command attended and assisted in evacuating the 18-unit building; however, one resident remained unaccounted for.

There were no other reports of injuries.

Officers from Fire and Rescue NSW attended and contained the fire.

A short time later, firefighters located the body of a man in a unit on the top floor of the building.

A crime scene has been established; specialist fire investigators and scene of crime officers will enter the building when it is deemed safe. As a consequence, the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted in coming days to confirm identity of the deceased and determine cause of death. Police are in contact with the family of the missing man.

Inquiries are now underway by detectives attached to South Sydney PAC.
