Today marks a significant milestone following the establishment of the new Darwin High School in February 2026 (Year 7-12), with the unveiling of its new school logo, the first change to the school's visual identity in more than 60 years.
The new logo represents the beginning of a new chapter as Darwin High School continues its journey as a comprehensive Year 7-12 secondary school.
Under the Northern Territory Government's Secondary Reform Program, Darwin Middle School and Darwin High School have united to become the Northern Territory's largest secondary school at the beginning of the year, creating a vibrant and diverse learning community.
This is a unique opportunity to define a shared identity for the new Darwin High School. Developing a new logo, enabled students, staff and the broader community to collectively shape a visual representation of who the new school is, what it stands for and the future it is building together.
Throughout the design process, it was important to honour the heritage and achievements of both schools while creating a contemporary identity that reflects a united, future-focused school community.
The new visual identity was developed through an extensive consultation process involving students, staff, families and alumni.
More than 1,140 students and staff participated in workshops, surveys, voting sessions and community engagement activities, while families and alumni also contributed valuable feedback throughout the process. More than 350 students and staff voted on the preferred final design, ensuring the outcome reflected the collective voice of the school community.
This consultation consistently identified several themes that shaped the final logo:
Darwin's coastal environment and the school's Bullocky Point location.Community, belonging and inclusivity.Recognition of Larrakia heritage and connection to Country.Respect for the school's history and identity.A contemporary, adaptable visual identity.A blue and natural coastal colour palette.
The final logo reflects the values and aspirations of the Darwin High School community, balancing heritage with innovation while marking the beginning of a new chapter for the school.
Darwin High School Principal, Annette Pedersen thanked students and the whole school community for contributing to a visual identity that captures the essence of the school.
"The passion and pride people have for Darwin High School was evident at every stage of the process. Seeing current students, former students, staff, families and community members come together to help define our new identity is a testament to the strength of our school community. It reinforces that our people are what make Darwin High School such a special place," Ms Pedersen said.
"Our new logo is a significant part of bringing together two proud school identities into one that reflects the unity we now have on the Bullocky Point campus. It honours our shared history while looking confidently to the future as one united Year 7-12 school."
"We are incredibly proud of the final design and excited about what it represents. It feels like we are now truly one school."
Department of Education and Training Acting Chief Executive, Aderyn Chatterton said the school should be very proud of the thought and effort it represents from so many in the school community that have been involved.
"The new logo honours the history and is a contemporary bold design that represents the future. The process behind it was such a positive and unifying experience for the entire school community," Ms Chatterton said.
As part of the official launch, the school commemorated this historic milestone with the planting of a banyan tree. Featured within the new logo, the banyan symbolises strength, connection, resilience and growth, reflecting the coming together of two school communities as one and the shared journey of Darwin High School as it continues to grow and flourish as a Year 7-12 school.
