The NT Greens condemn the violent, unprovoked and illegal attack on Iran by Israel and the United States, and the spillover effects on the whole region.
We are horrified by the consistent attacks on innocent civilians, including the murder of over 150 young girls and staff at a school in the early days of this conflict. In mere weeks, thousands of civilians have been killed, and millions affected.
It is shameful that Australia was the first country to formally support this war. It is evidence that Prime Minister Albanese and the Australian Labor Party are more concerned with placating Trump and Netanyahu than upholding international law, respecting human rights, or promoting peace and social cohesion.
And it is shameful that, after supporting this illegal war with weapons and personnel, the War Parties - Labor, the Liberals and One Nation - have gotten together to prevent valid visa holders from travelling to Australia. At least 7,200 Iranians, and thousands of others from the region, can be blocked from entering Australia, lest they use that legitimate form of entry to seek safety on our shores.
We stand in solidarity with civilians enduring the bombing of their homelands.
And we reject the Albanese Labor government's statements of solidarity. They are claiming that US and Israeli bombs are an expression of solidarity with the Iranian people.
But we know that murdering civilians is not solidarity.
Blowing up fuel stores, causing acid and oil to rain from the sky, is not solidarity.
Shutting the door on innocent refugees fleeing violence is not solidarity.
We are alarmed by the support for this war provided by the Pine Gap Joint Defence Facility on Arrernte Country, just outside Mparntwe Alice Springs.
Whilst there are US military facilities and personnel in Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs, the Northern Territory will be a potential target in this conflict.
When facilities on our soil are used to gather intelligence, direct targets, and accommodate US troops, we are complicit in this illegal war.
Whilst this war continues, the share prices of defence companies like Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman are increasing. Fossil fuel companies, weapons manufacturers, and the wealthy are profiting off of this conflict whilst innocent people die.
It is high time that Australia pursues a peaceful, independent foreign policy and ends our subservience to the US.
We must cancel the AUKUS agreement, close Pine Gap and other foreign military bases on our soil, end automatic support for illegal US imperial wars, and ensure that Australians are not directly or indirectly complicit in war crimes or violations of international law.
The Greens are the only party that will always oppose war, and promote peace and international law.
