British Science Festival Countdown: One Week to Go

There's just one week to go until the 194th British Science Festival opens in Liverpool, with a diverse and dynamic programme designed to bring science to life.

The Festival will showcase a wide range of events, from art installations and live performances to hands-on workshops and thought-provoking talks.

Events will take place across the University of Liverpool campus - including the VG&M and Tung Auditorium - as well as at some of the city's most iconic cultural venues such as Bluecoat, Kazimier Gardens, Liverpool ONE and Quirky Quarter.

Headliners

Headline speakers include advocate, presenter and social media star Tilley Lockey; geneticist Giles Yeo; Time Team genealogist Sophie Kay; Earth scientist Anjana Khatwa; mathematician Kit Yates; archaeologist Flint Dibble; and University of Liverpool alumnus and engineer Sir Robin Saxby.

Tours

City walking tours are also on offer. You can explore Liverpool's streets and uncover hidden histories of slavery or map Liverpool's music scene and contribute to research exploring how the city's vibrant live music culture is evolving.

On Saturday 12 September, you can catch Science rapper Jon Chase (AKA Oort Kuiper) performing throughout the afternoon on Church Street .

Art installations

Visitors can experience immersive artworks including Fungal Galaxies: Journey Inside Plants, a photography installation at College Lane that reveals the hidden beauty of microorganisms. Also on display is Geist, a large-scale sculpture by This is Loop, located in Liverpool ONE.

University highlights

Game On, Snack More looks at how junk-food marketing in gaming targets young audiences and its public health impact. Searching for Science's Invisible Women highlights overlooked women in science and their lasting contributions. All Aboard: Journey Through Intercity Innovation explores 200 years of the Liverpool-Manchester Railway, its legacy, and the future of UK rail.

Joint UoL and LJMU events

The University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University are co-sponsoring the Festival. Joint events include Liverpool in Space, which explores how research is shaping life on Earth and beyond; workshops on urban food growing and creating plant-inspired artworks; and Art Forgery to Astrophysics, a data science showcase revealing how data connects very different disciplines.

Research frontiers

University of Liverpool research is at the heart of the Festival, with events spanning particle physics, robotics, antivirals, AI and infection science.

Discover the universe's mysteries in Universal Secrets and Electrons in Wonderland, meet a Robo-chemist and a Robot artist, and watch roller skaters demonstrate how antivirals work. Explore how AI is transforming healthcare in the Puzzle Lab, and dive into nature's perils - from pandemics to microbes.

All events at the British Science Festival are free to attend.
