Broome to benefit from additional rooftop solar

  • Over 160 Broome households have had the opportunity to benefit from rooftop solar to offset their energy costs
  • An initial release of 900kW allocated to households will be followed by 1,400kW in December 2021 to be available to business and households in Broome
  • This will bring the total additional hosting capacity for Broome to 2,300kW this year
  • The State Government, through energy provider Horizon Power, is providing more renewable energy solutions as part of its commitment to delivering reliable, safe and affordable power to residents and businesses in regional and remote Western Australia.

Over 160 households in Broome have taken the opportunity to apply for rooftop solar photovoltaics on their premises to offset their energy costs with the release yesterday of an additional 900 kilowatts (kW) of hosting capacity. The release was met with an overwhelmingly positive response which saw the allocation exhausted by mid-morning.

Customers applied to take up this capacity through a redesigned and transparent online application system which will also deliver a more efficient technical assessment and review for their approvals.

A subsequent release of 250kW of hosting capacity will be available for residential customers together with 1150kW for business customers in December 2021. Yesterday's release was initially weighted towards households to reduce their energy bills. The December release will be accompanied by additional solutions to help business customers to access solar in a more cost-effective way.

This additional hosting capacity is made available as Horizon Power develops technical solutions to support increasing levels of renewable energy and develops customer products that provide communities with greater control over their energy costs.

Ongoing improvements to the allocation and distribution of hosting capacity when it becomes available will ensure this is distributed in the most equitable way possible.

As stated by Energy Minister Bill Johnston:

"It was pleasing to see more than 160 Broome households snapping up the opportunity to connect rooftop solar to reduce their energy costs.

"This is a step in the State Government's plan to invest in a low carbon future for WA and a working example of the Government's commitment to deliver regional development and renewable energy growth.

"Government regional energy provider, Horizon Power, has been working hard to transform the electricity grids across regional WA to support increasing levels of renewable energy and provide customers with greater choice and control over their energy."
