Budget 2023: Investing in Our Future with Smith Street Greening and Cooling

NT Government

Budget 2023 is creating local jobs and revitalising Darwin's CBD.

Budget 2023 is investing $3 million to deliver the next stage of the Greening and Cooling initiative of Darwin's CBD with Smith Street, between Knuckey Street and Whitfield Street being revitalised.

Territorians can expect to see revitalised streetscapes through the planting of shade trees, improved green spaces and better pedestrian access.

The streetscape revitalisation of Smith Street is a part of the Darwin City Deal 10 year plan to position Darwin as a vibrant and liveable tropical capital city, supported by a growing population and diversified economy through the implementation of initiatives to revitalise, cool and green Darwin's city centre.

Continuing Urban Greening and Cooling strategies will mitigate heat in the CBD, increasing public amenity and pedestrian traffic, decrease energy usage, and increase economic benefit by encouraging people to stay longer in the retail, commercial and recreational areas.

This project is due to commence in early 2024 and be completed by 2025.
