  • Work has begun on the new Wattleup East Primary School
  • $27 million school has been designed by Oldfield Knott Architects
  • New school includes early childhood teaching and administration blocks, general learning areas, specialist rooms for art and science, a music room and library

Construction is underway for the new Wattleup East Primary School in Hammond Park.

Education Minister Dr Tony Buti said the $27 million project will include classrooms that cater for general learning, along with state-of-the-art facilities for speciality subjects such as art, music and science.

The school environment will support teachers to deliver the curriculum that helps all students reach their full potential.

Plans for the school, designed by Oldfield Knott Architects, include a library, covered assembly area, oval and hard courts. Rooftop solar panels have also been included in the plans.

In addition, an inclusive education classroom will enable the school to run an Early Intervention Autism Program.

The school will accommodate 430 students and will relieve enrolment pressure at the nearby Hammond Park Primary School.

The school is anticipated to open for the start of 2024.

As stated by Education Minister Dr Tony Buti:

"Our world is changing rapidly. It's imperative that we provide a modern learning environment for Western Australian students to succeed and then go on to be competitive beyond their schooling years.

"Our goal is to ensure schools have the appropriate facilities and learning environment to enable students to follow their passions and support their dreams and future pathways.

"This is an important moment for families in Hammond Park, as I am sure this new school will become a vibrant hub of teaching, learning and community activity.

"Hammond Park is a popular suburb, and I am pleased to be delivering a new, state-of-the-art school that will provide a high-quality education for the growing community."

As stated by Kwinana MLA Roger Cook:

"This is a fantastic moment for the local community and very exciting for the local students and their families that will enrol in this new school.

"This new school is all about focusing on the future for our children and providing them with the best learning environment to help them reach their potential.

"It is also about giving them the support and the skills within a wonderful local community during these special formative years of their lives."
