The breadth and authority of Burnet Institute's HIV research has been impressively showcased at IAS 2019, the 10th International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Science, in Mexico City, Mexico.
Among the highlights was a Plenary Session presentation from Applications Team Lead, Dr Sherrie Kelly on the 'Sustainability of HIV programs and financing the HIV response'.
Dr Kelly is an infectious disease modeller specialising in applied health economics, with a background in epidemiology and global health focusing on HIV, TB and maternal and child health.
She leads the Burnet Institute's Optima group on HIV, TB and malaria modelling applications and research and also facilitates Optima training workshops and country missions.
Other Burnet presenters included Dr Kat Ryan, who reported on results from the PrEPX study, which examined the impact of pre-exposure prophylaxis on the rate of new HIV infections in Victoria.
Deputy Director (Programs), Professor Margaret Hellard participated in a panel discussion on the potential benefits of hepatitis C self-testing, and chaired a meeting of the International Collaboration on Hepatitis C in HIV Coinfection (InCHEHC) - a global collaboration involving 15 groups across eight countries.
