CA Gov Boosts Indigenous Sport Programs for Empowerment

Department of Finance Canada

Indigenous-led initiatives are central to fostering a strong sense of identity and belonging, and support the long-term growth and success of Indigenous people.

The federal government's Sport for Social Development in Indigenous Communities (SSDIC) program supports Indigenous people across Canada by funding Indigenous nations and organizations that deliver sport and recreation opportunities.

Today, the Honourable Wayne Long, Secretary of State (Canada Revenue Agency and Financial Institutions), highlighted the program's $227,071 investment in the Nistawoyou Association Friendship Centre to help it deliver Indigenous-led sport and recreation projects that will support the community's health and well-being. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Adam van Koeverden, Secretary of State (Sport).

In Fort McMurray, Alberta, these funds under Stream Three of the program will support the Nistawoyou Association Friendship Centre in offering culturally relevant and community-designed sport, recreation, and wellness activities to Indigenous women, girls, 2SLGBTQI+ people, and participants with disabilities.

Guided by Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community voices, the project combines physical activity, cultural teachings, and wellness supports that respond to community-identified needs and Calls for Justice of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

Through the program's $22.8-million investment, Indigenous-led projects like this one will expand access to sport and physical activity in communities across the country.

Since 2019, the Sport for Social Development in Indigenous Communities program, in collaboration with Indigenous-led organizations and governments, has benefited hundreds of communities across Canada.
