The Devonport Regional Gallery is pleased to announce that the Little Gallery Emerging Artists Program is now open for applications from emerging and early career Tasmanian artists to exhibit in 2022.
According to convention and art centre director Geoff Dobson, The Little Gallery Emerging Artists Program supports emerging and early career Tasmanian artists who demonstrate a strong vision in their practice. The Program is named in honour of Jean Thomas, who set up the first public gallery on the North-West Coast in 1966 and named it The Little Gallery.
"Jean Thomas' vision was to create a centre for community arts and activities that promoted the work of emerging and established Tasmanian artists alongside national and international artists," Mr Dobson said.
"The Program aims to promote the work of Tasmanian contemporary artists who demonstrate experimentation in 2D and 3D art forms. Applications are open to both individuals and groups, working in all forms of media."
Due to the pandemic the callout for this program did not take place last year as the 2020 scheduled exhibitions had to be moved to 2021.
The 2020 Little Gallery Program has been widely praised, proving to be a community favourite. Highlights have included Susan Simonini's bold paintings in Road to Somewhere, Travis Bell's experimental ceramic forms in an An Unexpected River, and Liam Fallon's still-life paintings, which found beauty in the mundane, in The Surface of Things.
Mr Dobson added "This year five applicants will be selected to exhibit in the Little Gallery space of the paranaple arts centre for 4-5-week periods throughout 2022.
