FedNor funding will allow partner communities to harvest hydro electric power from the Montreal River

Pauline Rochefort, Parliamentary Secretary to the Secretary of State (Rural Development), and Member of Parliament for Nipissing-Timiskaming, announced a FedNor investment of $90,360 to help pave the way for the Communities of the Montreal River Power Corp. to install a turbine and generate hydroelectricity (approximately one megawatt) at the Latchford Dam. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for FedNor.
Provided through FedNor's Northern Ontario Development Program, this non-repayable funding will be used to hire a project coordinator to advance this legacy project. Specifically, the coordinator will be responsible to update a feasibility study and concept design to confirm the project is economically viable and ready to proceed.
As the project advances, the coordinator will also be required to prepare and submit a proposal to the Independent Electricity Systems Operator (IESO) to facilitate the sale of hydro electric power to the provincial electrical grid. Partner communities that will benefit from this clean energy initiative include the Temagami First Nation, Timiskaming First Nation, Coleman Township, and the Town of Latchford.
