Canberra Earless Dragon Faces Extinction Threat

Australian Greens

Quotes attributed to Deputy Leader of the ACT Greens Jo Clay:

Today's news that construction has expanded to the intersection of the proposed Canberra Airport northern road with Majura Road is alarming and proves once again that Labor will choose the needs of developers and big corporations over the community and environment.

This construction is dangerously close to one of the last remaining habitats of the critically endangered Canberra Earless Dragon. If the road progresses it will effectively push our dragons into extinction.

This road is not needed. Every reason I have heard has been counteracted by options which already exist. As for mitigation measures, ecologists have said they are not tested and, in some cases such as tunnels, lead the dragons straight to one of their natural predators.

Our community has long fought to protect this habitat and give our critically endangered dragons the best chances to survive and thrive in nature. In February community pressure saw construction halt for the northern part of the road and Canberra Airport saying they would not restart until they developed a nature positive plan for the dragon.

Since the Federal Labor Government didn't act - please Canberra Airport Group listen to your community and back your own promise.

Quotes attributed to Greens Candidate for Canberra Isabel Mudford:

The Albanese Government has betrayed the Canberra community saying there will be no new extinctions on their watch.

Yet despite having the power to revoke the road and save the dragon - or at the very least delay construction until plans were in place to protect the dragon - they chose to sit back and call an election.

Don't forget this happened right after Labor and Liberals joined forces to weaken environmental laws and actively protected corporations to push the Maugean Skate into extinction.

Labor's inaction is now seeing the road expand and encroach on one of the last dragon habitats, pushing the animal further into extinction.
