New state-of-the-art laser eye imaging technology at Canberra Hospital is improving diagnosis and care for patients with eye conditions across the ACT.
The Optos Silverstone RGB Ultra-Wide Field Imaging Device is now installed and fully operational at the Canberra Hospital Eye Clinic, making it the first in Australia to receive and use this system.
The new device captures highly detailed images of the eye in less than half a second, providing a comprehensive 200‑degree view of the retina that previously required multiple photos. It can also perform highly detailed assessment of blood flow to the eye as well as high resolution scans of the retina.
Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said the nation leading device represents an important step forward in the delivery of eye health services in the ACT.
"What makes this technology particularly important is the difference it will make for patients, with faster appointments, clearer results, potentially reducing the need for dilating drops and multiple tests while improving comfort, especially for children and people with reduced mobility," Minister Stephen-Smith said.
"For clinicians, better visualisation will lead to more detailed and accurate diagnosis and earlier detection of eye disease, making their work more efficient and improving job satisfaction.
"We are proud that the ACT is the first jurisdiction in Australia to introduce this advanced Optos technology. It's a clear example of how investment in advanced diagnostic equipment strengthens our public health system and improves the experience and outcomes for patients."
