Candidates urged to build better Hume as election date announced

Hume City Council has urged candidates and voters to consider local community needs as the 2022 Federal Election campaign formally begins.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called the election for 21 May, kicking off a six-week campaign to win the hearts and minds of Australian voters.

In the lead up to the Federal Election, Hume City Council is advocating for a range of Federal policy and funding support on behalf of a fast-growing community.

This includes initiatives to reduce the amount of time locals spend in traffic, boost education options close to home, and support for those most in need.

Council is calling on all Federal Election candidates to build a better Hume by committing to support:

  • Congestion-busting projects to unlock our City's economic potential:
  • Delivery of the Bulla Bypass
  • Delivery of the Outer Metropolitan Ring Road, and
  • Hume Freeway upgrades.
  • More tertiary education options in Hume's growth areas
  • COVID recovery initiatives to address ongoing employment and mental health issues, and
  • Support for refugees and asylum seekers, including reinstatement of Status Resolution Support Services, access to essential medical services, and education and employment opportunities.

Hume residents and businesses can help advocate by:

  • Following Hume City Council on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn for the latest advocacy information so they know the candidates who will help build a better Hume.
  • Spreading the word by talking to family and friends about Hume's advocacy priorities, or sharing Council's social media posts.
  • Telling local candidates about our community priorities.

Hume City Council Mayor, Councillor Carly Moore, said:

"Hume City Council is one of Australia's fastest-growing and most diverse communities. Our population of 257,000 will expand to 394,000 in the next 20 years, and we need vital infrastructure and services to grow with us.

"In the lead up to the 2022 Federal Election, we're calling on candidates from every political party to help build a better Hume.

"We need investment that relieves road congestion, creates tertiary education opportunities where we live, helps hard-hit communities recover from COVID-19, and supports refugees and asylum seekers making a life in Hume."
