The City of Ballarat has welcomed the State Government's confirmation that the Kings Caveat has been lifted on the Ballarat Saleyards site on Latrobe Street. This removes a huge barrier to future use of the site.
The Kings Caveat prevented the land from being used as anything other than saleyards; this outdated legal requirement was an obstacle for the development of the area and meant the site has stood vacant for since the saleyards operation closed in 2018.
Works completed so far in preparation for delivery of the athletes village for the Commonwealth Games included Geotech works and ongoing discussions with the EPA.
However there is still a lot of work to be done to remediate the site, including:
- Decontamination
- Drainage infrastructure on the site and into Victoria Park
- Review of road upgrades including traffic and other streetscape renewals
- Review of the possibility of an extension to Gilles Street
Once these works are complete it significantly increases the potential for development of the 14-hectare site and makes a range of community uses possible.
City of Ballarat will use the extensive information that was provided to us through the Latrobe Street Saleyards Precinct Urban Renewal Project 2019 project to work with Development Victoria and the community to form a structure plan for the future use of the site.
