Colac Otway residents and their four-legged friends will soon benefit from a new dedicated off-leash dog park at Central Reserve with construction to begin next week.
The public space responds to strong community advocacy for a purpose-built off-leash dog area.
Council CEO Andrew Tenni said that community members had shown a real passion and persistence in advocating for a dedicated dog park.
"The community's input has helped shape a project that will provide a safe, welcoming space for dogs and their owners to enjoy," he said.
To prepare the site for construction, trees within Central Reserve have been removed due to their condition and associated safety concerns.
Park construction will include establishment of gravel and mulch zones, along with the installation of natural log elements to encourage development and play.
In addition, a range of park furniture and infrastructure will be installed, including a water fountain, seating, signage and other amenities to ensure a comfortable and user-friendly environment for visitors.
"The new dog park will deliver a number of key community benefits including a secure, designated off-leash area where owners can safely exercise their dogs, encouraging community connection among dog owners and park users" Mr Tenni said.
The Central Reserve Dog Park reflects Council's ongoing commitment to enhancing community spaces and supporting active, connected lifestyles for residents.
The worksite area will be fenced off, and provisions will be made for the safe movement of pedestrians that may be affected by the development.
Council does not anticipate any impact to local football and netball matches, however visitors to Central Reserve are encouraged to follow any traffic management directions that are in place.
Works are anticipated to be completed prior to Christmas.
