- Carnarvon Street and Dampier Terrace works set to start this month

Broome's Chinatown Revitalisation Project is set to enter its next stage, with construction to begin on major streetscape upgrades in Carnarvon Street and Dampier Terrace this month.
A $6.9 million contract was awarded to Downer EDI Works Pty Ltd following a procurement process which assessed submissions against a range of criteria including value for money, experience, and ensuring significant local content in the project.
Improvements for Carnarvon Street and Dampier Terrace include streetscapes with improved shade during the day and lighting at night, alfresco meeting places and street furniture, trees and green space plantings and traffic calming measures.
Designs that reflect and recall Chinatown's history and heritage and use Kimberley wood and stone are featured throughout the works.
Works are expected to be complete by early 2019.
As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
"Broome's Chinatown is a place woven into the heart of the nation.
"This revitalisation project is aimed at protecting that standing and developing economic benefits that can flow to the local community.
"These works will provide a vastly improved public space for tourists and for locals.
"It is also one of the first projects in WA where the contractor has been required to implement a Local Participation Plan to document the extent of local business involvement in the project, as part of the State Government's new WA Industry Participation Strategy.
"The project partners, led by the Shire of Broome, have worked closely with contractors to structure an approach to the work that will minimise disruption to businesses and the continuous operation of Chinatown throughout construction."
As stated by Kimberley MLA Josie Farrer:
"It is an exciting time for Broome with the Chinatown revitalisation progressing nicely.
"I knew Chinatown to be a special place for the Broome community when I would visit all those years ago from Halls Creek. The new works will bring the community back in, and tourists will appreciate this important place of Broome.
"The McGowan Labor Government has gone above and beyond to get this project moving and I am so appreciative that they are looking after the Broome community."
