People will be able to celebrate the Year of the Tiger with NSW Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages (the Registry) releasing a special Chinese Zodiac commemorative birth certificate.
Designed by Australian-Chinese contemporary brush painter Lucy Wang, the Year of the Tiger commemorative birth certificate recognises the rich and diverse culture of NSW.
NSW Registrar Amanda Ianna said the launch marks the beginning of the Lunar New Year which is an important celebration for many people living in NSW including Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Korean communities.
"We are so excited to share the beautiful artwork that Lucy has created for the Year of the Tiger, these make for a special Lunar New Year keepsake or for a new baby or someone born in the Year of the Tiger," Ms Ianna said.
Traditionally trained in the oriental arts and raised in the suburbs of Sydney, Lucy was selected from a pool of artists invited to submit their style and high-level concept for the new design.
Ms Wang said she combined the traditional aesthetics of Chinese culture along with contemporary themes and motifs of NSW to create the artwork.
"Recognising the zodiac sign in the birth certificate is a wonderful way to bring forth a celebration of multiculturalism in NSW," Ms Wang said.
The Chinese zodiac birth certificate joins the Registry's growing range of commemorative certificates which seek to appeal to a broader and more inclusive range of audiences. The current range includes Indigenous artwork, NRL and Rugby Union teams, Australian Classics, baby handprints, May Gibbs illustrations and Peppa Pig.
Commemorative birth certificates can be obtained at any time for people of any age born or adopted in NSW.
