The City of Darwin is encouraging families to swap the car ride for a healthier and more sustainable journey to school this National Ride2School Day on Friday 20 March.

Students across Darwin will join more than 350,000 children nationwide walking, cycling, scooting or skating to school, turning the morning school drop off into a fun and active start to the day.

Ride2School is a nationwide program delivered by Bicycle Network, designed to support schools in encouraging, empowering and enabling more students to get physically active on their journey to school.

Lord Mayor Peter Styles said active travel benefits both the community and the environment.

"Active travel is not only great for your health and wellbeing, but it also reduces environmental impact, reduces traffic, improves community wellbeing and enhances quality of life," Mr Styles said.

"We want to support and encourage Darwin families to live happy, healthy and active lives."

National Ride2School Day is a great reminder that small changes to daily routines can create healthier families, stronger communities and a more sustainable city, he said.
