The City of Perth is continuing the rollout of its smart city innovation program, with the launch of its Citizen Science Project.
The project is one of four to be implemented by the City after it secured a matched funding grant worth $1.3million from the Australian Government, through the Smart Cities and Suburbs Program.
Under the grant the City of Perth is investing in Smart technology development and hardware installation to improve community safety, productivity, economic development and sustainability.
Acting Chair Commissioner Gaye McMath said engagement with the community is paramount, particularly in relation to this Citizen Science Project.
"This project will see the City of Perth actively engage with other Local Governments, high-schools, universities and community groups to show how data can be used to improve urban decision making," Acting Chair Commissioner McMath said.
"For example, schools are being offered the ability to monitor environmental indicators such as temperature, humidity, air and water quality readings in their local area, and can collaborate with other participants on this data to understand local environmental conditions.
"By collaborating with commercial providers and academic communities on these emerging and innovative technologies we hope to stimulate new research projects and ultimately new business concepts, as well as finding innovative solutions to urban challenges.
"Overall, these Smart Cities projects aim to test the application of equipment and smart technologies in real life settings, with the resultant insights expected to be of value to citizens, business and the environment."
