City Celebrates Year Of Horse

Traditional lion dancers, K-pop performances and street markets are just some of the ways you can celebrate the Lunar New Year in the City of Perth.

Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds said the Year of the Horse started today with the second new moon of the year, and people were expected to flock to the City to celebrate.

"We're ringing in the Lunar New Year in the City from today with an exciting line up of cultural events which offer something for everyone to enjoy," Mr Reynolds said.

The City is proud to sponsor the much-loved Perth Chinese New Year Fair, presented by the Chung Wah Association, returning to Northbridge on Sunday, 22 February. James Street will be closed to traffic and transformed into a vibrant marketplace celebrating Asian cultures through food, performances and community activities.

Celebrations will also take place at WA Museum Boola Bardip, where visitors can farewell the Terracotta Warriors exhibition and welcome the Lunar New Year with food trucks, entertainment and family-friendly activities among the Lanterns of Terracotta Warriors.

"The City of Perth is home to many people who celebrate Lunar New Year, and we're proud to be at the heart of these festivities," the Lord Mayor said.

"Along with the wider community, we are privileged to experience the rich culture and traditions that Lunar New Year brings. On behalf of the City of Perth, I wish everyone a happy and prosperous Year of the Horse."

Over six vibrant nights, Elizabeth Quay will burst into celebration with live entertainment, traditional dance and battle drums. Lion and dragon performances will take place nightly at 6.45pm, creating the perfect backdrop as the sun sets over the river. On Saturday, 21 February, the precinct will also host a Lunar New Year market featuring unique finds and delicious street food.

From 21 - 22 February, Yagan Square will welcome the Year of the Horse, with colourful lanterns, festive decorations and spectacular cultural performances. Adding to the energy, Diversity Perth will deliver an electrifying K-Pop performance showcasing creativity, community and local talent.

Daily lion dancer performances will also take place at Murray Street Mall from midday every weekday between 17 to 20 February, while red lanterns will adorn city malls and the streets of Northbridge throughout the month.
