City of Ballarat welcomes Her Majesty's funding promise

City of Ballarat has welcomed a promise of $5 million-dollar funding for Her Majesty's Theatre, if a Labor Government is elected at the 18 May federal election and has called on all sides of politics to match the funding.

Her Majesty's Theatre has been closed since December 2017 for critical works to make it safer, more accessible and more functional.

Ballarat Mayor, Cr Samantha McIntosh, says the promised $5 million funding will help complete critical works at the theatre.

"Her Majesty's Theatre is one of Ballarat's most loved institutions, hosting tens of thousands of people each year. The people of Ballarat have rallied behind the Save Her Majesty's - The Time is Now campaign, with thousands signing a petition and many others donating funds towards a new Her Majesty's Foundation.

"This has been a hugely successful campaign which has received massive community support. It's good to know we have been heard and that money will be available so that critical works at the theatre can be completed".

"Ballarat City Council has committed $5.3 million to this project and was pleased to welcome a $10 million funding commitment for Her Majesty's from the State Government last year.

"Federal funding will ensure the full scope of the required works can be delivered as a matter of urgency to make Her Majesty's Ballarat more accessible, safer and functional.

"Audiences and performers will be able to enjoy a premium entertainment experience in a space which seamlessly blends historical ambience and modern functionality. These will be the most significant works undertaken at the theatre since it was built 144 years ago."
