The popular ACT Government grants for community gardens are now open with $40,000 available to help community groups improve the city's sustainability.
Minister for Environment Rebecca Vassarotti today said the grant funding will support not-for-profit community organisations that promote health, wellbeing and a sense of community through local garden projects.
"We know that Canberrans love the environment, and we're fortunate to have so many community groups with diverse and innovative ideas to support our local environment," Minister Vassarotti said.
"There are many great benefits that come from community gardens including support for natural biodiversity, reduction of greenhouse emissions and sustainable living. Beyond the positive environmental impact these gardens have, they're also spaces that support inclusion, healthy wellbeing and provide a sense of belonging.
"This year, we are particularly interested in seeing applications for projects that understand and demonstrate the principles of zero emissions and carbon capture. It is because of community-led initiatives that the ACT is able to remain a leader in climate change action.
"We are proud to be able to support local groups that showcase and engage with innovative, sustainable urban agriculture practices that reduce carbon emissions."
As stated by Church of the Good Shepherd, Chairperson Cheryl Turek:
"The Community Garden Grants helped us create a meeting place for social interaction between local residents. The garden provides free nutritious vegetables to the local community along with teaching gardening skills and expanding knowledge.
"Due to COVID-19, we had to put on hold having the community come into the garden, but the past year has made us even more appreciative of working alongside each other in the garden, sharing ideas and building friendships."
Not-for-profit community groups are encouraged to apply, with grants up to $10,000 available per project. There have previously been six rounds of Community Gardens Grants, with 50 projects receiving $188,529 since 2015.
