Community Input Sought To Shape Future Of Magill Campus

SA Gov

Residents are again being encouraged to help shape the future of the Magill campus, with community feedback sought on high-level plans for a new green and inclusive neighbourhood that addresses local needs alongside aged care and housing demand.

The Malinauskas Labor Government is seeking feedback on the draft Magill Campus Structure Plan, released in February this year, which outlines key principles for how future development will balance strategic urban infill with local needs and aspirations.

Through both online and in person engagement undertaken by Renewal SA, the community can have input into the key elements and overall direction of the plan.

The draft structure plan can be viewed at renewalsa.sa.gov.au/projects/magill

This is the second round of engagement on the project. The first round, held between November 2024 and February 2025, helped inform the development of the draft structure plan.

Works on the three-hectare parcel east of St Bernards Road are expected to begin no later than 2027 and this round of consultation will seek community input on land uses, which include market housing, aged care and retirement living, affordable homes and open space.

Further master planning, following this consultation, will determine the design and make-up of these key elements, all of which will be developed having regard to the existing general neighbourhood zoning.

Renewal SA has previously committed to a maximum of 100 homes for market sale, with a minimum of 20 per cent of these dedicated to affordable housing, to be sold through HomeSeeker SA.

These affordable homes are proposed to be delivered as low scale apartments on the smaller parcel of land adjoining St Bernards Road and Gertrude Street.

The community will also be asked for input into the preferred mix and use of open space, which will make up a minimum of 17 per cent of the site.

Development of the main 11-hectare campus site to the west is a much longer-term process which is not anticipated to commence before 2033-34 due to the ongoing lease with Adelaide University. This will involve more detailed planning and consultation as the timeline nears.

The engagement period opens on Monday 27 April and will run for eight weeks, closing on Monday 22 June.

A community drop-in session will also be held at the Magill Campus on Saturday 9 May, providing an opportunity for face to face discussion with the Renewal SA project team.

The Malinauskas Labor Government acquired the Magill campus in late 2023 as part of the merger of the former University of Adelaide and University of South Australia.

As put by Nick Champion

The Magill campus is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to work with residents deliver what this local community needs.

I encourage everyone with an interest in the future of this site to use this consultation period to have their say.

Local voices have shaped this plan so far and they will continue to shape it as we move forward.

As put by Matthew Marozzi MP, Member for Morialta

Throughout the election campaign, I, along with the Premier, the Minister, and Jenn Roberts, engaged closely with local residents and advocacy groups to help determine the future of the Magill University site.

Central to this work has been securing protection for Murray House, the Creek line, and key green spaces, while also responding to the broader community's need for housing, aged care, and retirement living

Throughout my candidacy, I consistently emphasised that ongoing community engagement is essential to delivering the outcomes this site deserves.

Now, as the Member for Morialta, I welcome the commencement of the next round of consultation and look forward to collaborating with residents and the broader community throughout this important process.

As put by Jenn Roberts MP, Member for Hartley

As a Magill resident living within my electorate, I know how important the Magill university site is to people across our community. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity, and it's vital that the voices of residents in Hartley and Morialta help shape the future of this site.

Key elements such as aged care, retirement living, open space, and a linear park that protects and enhances the environment are priorities not just for me, but for the broader community. I welcome today's announcement from the Minister and strongly encourage everyone to have their say and play a role in shaping the future of our shared backyard.

This development represents a chance to create a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable space that reflects the needs and aspirations of our community, both now and into the future.
