Council hosted R U OK? Day film screenings in Yea, Alexandra and Kinglake during September, attracting over 250 people to local halls and helping to raise awareness about mental health, self-care and available local professional services.
Each event began with a community barbecue, supported by the Rotary Club of Yea, Alexandra Events and the Rotary Club of Kinglake Ranges, who provided the meals and welcomed participants. After the screenings, attendees remained for supper, providing a relaxed and welcoming space to catch up, share stories and strengthen community connections.
Local mental health experts Naomi McNamara, Sarah Austin and Jennifer Wood raised the profile of local services and emphasised the importance of checking in with others, reminding participants that a simple "Are you OK?" can initiate meaningful conversation, support and hope.
R U OK? Day is a national initiative encouraging Australians to reach out and support each other, not just on the day itself but every day. These screenings gave residents a chance to practise caring conversations, share experiences and build connections.
Council thanks everyone who attended, shared a meal and stayed for the stories, and acknowledges the support of the Rotary Clubs of Yea and Kinglake Ranges, Alexandra Events, Alexandra District Health, Yea and District Memorial Hospital, the Goulburn Regional Drought Resilience Plan, and funding provided by the Commonwealth and Victorian Governments under the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), which made these events possible.
Mayor Damien Gallagher said, "Spending time together, checking in on each other and sharing experiences is vital for our mental health and wellbeing. These events reminded us that even small gestures, like asking 'Are you OK?', can make a real difference. It was great to see so many members of our community involved in these events. Thanks to all our event supporters and everyone who joined us to share a meal, watch a film and connect with neighbours. You helped make these evenings meaningful."
