Community unrest - Tiwi Islands

Northern Territory Police are working with local leaders and traditional owners to address a dispute between family groups that has escalated over recent days.

Superintendent Brendan Muldoon said, "What started off as some inflammatory comments on social media has led to three family groups becoming involved in a dispute.

"Local police based at Wurramiyanga have facilitated mediation between the families with some good results; however there are factions in the community who are continuing to upset others.

"Our local Aboriginal Liaison Officers are providing amazing assistance with this situation. Due to the ongoing unrest, the local police were in need of some respite and additional support. Today five additional members flew from Darwin to maintain a police presence, continue to engage key stakeholders and conduct reassurance patrols in the community."
