Construction Begins on Chilwell Library Revamp

Construction is officially underway on the Chilwell Library redevelopment in Sladen Park, Newtown with a ceremonial sod-turning held to mark the milestone.

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM joined State Member for Geelong Christine Couzens MP, City CEO Ali Wastie, and representatives from Geelong Regional Libraries and Chilwell Library Group to celebrate the milestone.

The $2.5 million project, supported by a $150,000 grant from the Victorian Government's Living Libraries Infrastructure Program, will transform the beloved library into a modern, light-filled community hub while preserving its intimate, neighbourhood charm.

The revitalised library will feature flexible meeting rooms, a welcoming outdoor deck, improved amenities including public toilets, and stronger connections to the surrounding park.

Construction commenced on 7 July following the library's temporary closure on 29 June. The upgraded facility is expected to reopen in mid-2026.

A great deal of thought and planning has gone into ensuring this upgrade is one that the whole community can enjoy.

We look forward to welcoming the community back to a revitalised Chilwell Library next year.

State Member for Geelong Christine Couzens MP

The Chilwell Library is a much loved resource for the local community.

This redevelopment will provide the community with a modern, accessible library to be enjoyed into the future.

Geelong Regional Libraries CEO Vanessa Schernickau

Public libraries are far more than bricks and books - they're vital community hubs.

Chilwell Library is the perfect example of that, and we can't wait to welcome people through the doors into the revamped space.

We're grateful to the City of Greater Geelong and the state Government for funding for this much appreciated redevelopment.

Chilwell Library Group member Lynne Dowling

After eight years of advocating for a meeting room and toilets at Chilwell Library, our Group of six is delighted by this long awaited outcome.
