Council is taking the next step in delivering the Australian Government-funded $40 million Shoalhaven Roads Package, with a preferred contractor selected to construct two new roundabouts.

Civil infrastructure contractor A1 Earthworx Mining and Civil has been selected as the preferred tenderer following a competitive procurement process and will deliver two key roundabouts at Worrigee and Callala Bay.

Mayor Patricia White said it was great to have A1 Earthworx Mining and Civil confirmed as the contractor and to see the project move from planning into delivery.

"These roundabouts will improve safety and traffic flow at two busy intersections and help create safer, more reliable journeys for residents and visitors," Cr White said.

"Appointing a contractor is an important milestone and gives our community confidence that these long-awaited road improvements are moving ahead," she said.

Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips said she was pleased to see the Albanese Labor Government's $40 million Shoalhaven Roads Package continuing to progress.

"These projects will deliver lasting benefits for local motorists by reducing congestion, improving safety and supporting the future needs of our growing community," Mrs Phillips said.

"I worked hard to secure this $40 million funding package, and it is fantastic to see these important upgrades moving closer to delivery."

In accordance with the funding agreement, Council is working with the Australian Government to obtain the release of funding to commence main construction works. Once funding is released, Council will be able to execute the construction contract. Works are expected to commence in early 2027.

The works form part of a package of upgrades across four roads and two intersections in the Shoalhaven region. The two new roundabouts will be constructed at the intersection of Callala Bay Road, Forest Road, Currarong Road and Coonemia Road; and the intersection of Worrigee Road, Greenwell Point Road and Millbank Road.

Both new roundabouts will:

  • improve road safety by reducing vehicle speeds;

  • improve traffic flow and help reduce delays at the intersection;

  • make the intersections easier to navigate by simplifying vehicle movements;

  • support cars, buses, heavy vehicles and agricultural vehicles; and

  • provide improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

Major works are expected to commence in February 2027, with enabling works including vegetation removal, telecommunications adjustments, electrical and watermain relocations continuing throughout 2026.

Estimated construction timeframes for the six projects are outlined below.

  • Callala Bay Road / Forest Road / Coonemia Road intersection (roundabout): February 2027 to December 2027

  • Worrigee Road / Greenwell Point Road intersection (roundabout): February 2027 to September 2027

  • Forest Road: April 2027 to October 2027

  • Callala Beach Road: September 2027 to February 2028

  • Culburra Road: September 2027 to February 2028

  • Callala Bay Road: October 2027 to June 2028
