  • Part of the Cook Government's commitment to end family and domestic violence andbuild safe and inclusive communities

A new 16-unit transitional accommodation facility in Kalgoorlie is set to bolster the Cook Government's response to family and domestic violence (FDV) by keeping more victim-survivors safe in the Goldfields.

Minister for Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence, Jessica Stojkovski, made the announcement while visiting Kalgoorlie during the 16 Days in WA - Stop Violence Against Women campaign.

The new accommodation is among a range of initiatives to support women and children impacted by FDV in the Goldfields.

The Cook Government has awarded a $2.14 million contract to a Kalgoorlie company to refurbish the 16 units to ensure they are fit for purpose for transitional accommodation, with further funding allocated by the Commonwealth Government via a $780,000 Safe Places grant to improve security at the site.

Cook Government funding of $876,000 over three years, commencing 1 July 2026, has also been allocated for the delivery of an additional Safe at Home program for the region, to provide support for women and children staying at the new units.

Through case management support, the Safe at Home program offers safety and stability to victim-survivors, keeps them connected to their networks and supports long term recovery.

Centrecare currently provides a Safe at Home service in Kalgoorlie and surrounding areas, supporting community members within their own homes.

These announcements coincide with Mara Pirni Healing Place, Kalgoorlie's One Stop FDV Hub celebrating their five-year anniversary of providing vital support to victim-survivors in the Goldfields.

Launched in 2020, the Kalgoorlie Hub, together with the Mirrabooka Hub (Naala Djookan Healing Centre) was the first of its kind in WA, serving as the blueprint for a unique form of victim-survivor support.

The One Stop Hub model is designed to make it easier for victim-survivors to get the specialist support they need by providing a range of wraparound FDV services in one location. The model offers supports such as counselling, advocacy, legal and housing advice, risk assessment and safety planning, as well as "soft entry" supports such as yoga, craft and cultural activities, showers and laundry facilities.

The Mara Pirni Healing Place is delivered by Hope Community Services and partner agencies Ngunytju Tjitji Pirni Aboriginal Corporation, One Tree Community Services, Wanslea Family Services, Aboriginal Legal Service WA and Goldfields Indigenous Housing Organisation. It is now one of five Hubs around Western Australia.

Now in its ninth year, the 16 Days in WA theme for 2025 is 'Stopping Family and Domestic Violence: Play your part', which encourages Western Australians to drive cultural change by challenging the harmful behaviours and attitudes that lead to family and domestic violence.

For the first time, 16 Days in WA will focus on men and boys championing respect for women and taking positive action to support the campaign across the State.

As stated by Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence Minister Jessica Stojkovski:

"Ensuring the safety of victim-survivors of family and domestic violence is a priority of the Cook Government as part of its commitment to building inclusive and safe communities.

"The new Kalgoorlie transitional accommodation units combined with investment to create a new Safe at Home service will provide supported accommodation to victim-survivors where they can live independently and work on re-establishing their lives after escaping violence.

"By refurbishing existing units, we can ensure more families reach safety sooner and deliver the additional capacity Kalgoorlie needs.

"This investment strengthens the local service system, improves frontline capacity, and ensures families can remain close to their community, culture and supports.

"I would also like to acknowledge the important contribution of Hope Community Services and the partner agencies for their vital work over five years in delivering Mara Pirni Healing Place, also known as the Kalgoorlie One Stop Hub, reflecting their commitment to their community."

As stated by Housing and Works Minister John Carey:

"These new transitional units will make a real and immediate difference to families impacted by family and domestic violence in the Goldfields, giving them a safe place to stay, close to their community, their schools and their support networks.

"This is the kind of investment from the Cook Government, that changes lives and strengthens our region.

"Expanding Safe at Home and investing in upgraded accommodation allows victim-survivors to stay connected, rebuild with dignity and feel safe in their own community.

"I'm incredibly proud to see this commitment from the Cook Government to the Goldfields and proud of the organisations like Mara Pirni who walk alongside families every day."
