Small businesses in Corangamite Shire can apply for up to $5000 to improve, reinvest or update how they do business.

Corangamite Shire's Small Business Assistance Program (SBAP) is designed to encourage innovation, adaptation or diversification.

Mayor Ruth Gstrein said businesses could apply for up to $5000 on a $1:$1 basis.

"A lot of businesses are struggling during the pandemic. It's a matter of finding innovative ways to get their goods and services to the customers in spite of the current challenges.

"This program is designed to help existing businesses become more sustainable and help start-ups get off the ground," Cr Gstrein said.

"That means more jobs and those workers are then able to spend and support other businesses in the Shire."

"If your business is in the Shire and has 20 or fewer full-time equivalent employees, you could be eligible."

Some examples of projects that could be considered include:

  • investment in new infrastructure for the business
  • electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure
  • new website/point of sale software
  • new equipment to allow the business to expand
  • upgrades to the inside of a building
  • investment in new technology
  • creation of new spaces to allow a business to expand.

Planning fees (where relevant) are proposed to be waived by Council as part of the program to encourage participation, however, any relevant building permit fees would still apply.

Manager Growth and Engagement Rory Neeson said the program has been slightly updated from the program Council offered last year.

"The aim of the SBAP is to encourage new and existing businesses in the Shire to complete upgrades and improvements to their business.

"It provides a way for Council to encourage businesses to expand, grow and invest back in their business.

The grants also provide a wider economic benefit across the Shire with many previous applicants using local suppliers to complete projects."

Businesses are strongly encouraged to speak with Council officers for personalised advice before they apply and may be required to complete the Business Permits Self-Assessment Checklist on the Council website to determine if any permits are required for what is proposed in their application.

Applications can be made here until 27 September 2021. Recipients will have until 30 June 2022 complete their project.
