The Faculty of Biology at the University of Barcelona hosted the tenth Recerkids conference, in which more than 280 children took part. It is a programme promoted by the Ministry of Research and Universities of the Government of Catalonia, aimed at pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 of primary school. The aim is to foster scientific vocations and to showcase the research and dissemination work carried out by universities and research centres.
This year's Recerkids was dedicated to the mathematician and astronomer Maria Assumpció Català, a UB professor whose birth centenary is being commemorated. The students worked on mathematics and the observation of the universe, and developed scientific research projects. Afterwards, they presented these projects at the Faculty of Biology and discussed them with the UB research staff. They also took part in various workshops organized by the Institute of Cosmos Sciences and La UB Divulga: Dansa d'estrelles binàries (binary star dance), La força que ens uneix (the force that unites us) and Preparats per a l'eclipsi! (ready for the eclipse!). The conference was concluded by the director general of Research, Teresa Sanchis, and the UB vice-rector for Doctoral Studies, Trainee Research Staff, Talent Attraction and Dissemination, Maria Feliu.
In total, more than 2,300 pupils from across Catalonia took part in this edition of Recerkids, which has included various conferences at different universities in the region. Over its 10 years of existence, Recerkids has reached 300 primary schools and more than 25,000 children.
