City of Melton residents will see some changes to their kerbside waste collection service, including the introduction of a dedicated glass recycling bin in July 2027, as Council introduces a four-bin system as mandated by the Victorian Government.

Under the Victorian Government Kerbside Waste Reforms, all Victorian Councils are required to introduce a standard four-stream waste and recycling system to households by 1 July 2027.

Key changes for residents will be the introduction of a purple glass recycling bin and the universal roll-out of the green food organics and garden organics (FOGO) bin, rather than an opt-in system.

The glass bin will be collected four-weekly, while FOGO collection will continue to take place fortnightly. There will be no changes to the weekly red general waste bin and fortnightly yellow recycling bin collection services.

The new glass bin will complement the existing Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) by offering another alternative for residents to recycle glass, including types which are not yet accepted by the CDS.

Residents will receive information from Council closer to the roll-out outlining what the changes are and when they will take effect.

Council will also support the community with the transition through a comprehensive education campaign to inform what items should go in each bin.

Quotes attributable to City of Melton Mayor Cr Steve Abboushi:

"Council supports sustainable waste management practises that increase resource recovery and reduce materials going to landfill."

"We have undertaken research to help determine what the new service model will look like and to ensure it best fits the needs of residents while meeting our requirements as mandated by the Victorian Government."
