Council has approved an outdoor dining trial.
Under the trial current shop, café and restaurant operators will be able to utilise outdoor space adjacent to their business for additional dining.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said he was delighted to support the initiative.
"I want to see our city and suburbs activated - people attract people and supporting this motion supports local businesses during a difficult economic time."

Alderman Mick Palmer said by proposing the motion he was acting on the many requests he has received from local businesses to expand Darwin's outdoor dining options.
"Council has been working on a range of initiatives to stimulate and encourage activation of the City Centre and support local businesses throughout the municipality."

Existing regulations and permits currently in place for outdoor dining are being updated and City of Darwin has commenced discussions with local businesses on amendments to guidelines and policies.
The trial is expected to start within weeks with some businesses advising they are ready to commence trading.
Prospective outdoor dining operators will still need to apply for a permit to operate and ensure footpaths are kept clear to ensure traffic flow.
