Federation Council is taking a major step toward safeguarding the township of Morundah by endorsing a critical grant application for vital local flood mitigation infrastructure. At its council meeting in June, Council voted to proceed with an application to Round 4 of the Federal Government Disaster Ready Fund (DRF).
To secure the federal funding, Council has formally committed to a 20% cash co-contribution of $168,000 from unrestricted cash, seeking the remaining 80% $672,000 from the DRF grant scheme ahead of 1 July 2026 application deadline.
The targeted works address long-standing vulnerabilities in Morundah, which is prone to riverine flooding in Colombo Creek as well as local catchment runoff. The comprehensive plan involves constructing a 700-meter-long, 0.7-meter-high flow diversion bund (levee bank) and upgrading the discharge capacity of the piped drain through the existing Colombo Creek.
Federation Council Mayor, Cr Cheryl Cook said this project is an absolute priority for safeguarding the Morundah community.
"By putting forward the $168,000 in Council funds, we are positioning ourselves to lock in a substantial federal investment that will drastically reduce future flood damage to both private property and public infrastructure. Our community has been extensively consulted with and fully supported these final designs, and we are completely ready to begin construction in mid-2027 upon a successful grant outcome."
The final detailed design documentation was previously adopted by Council in late 2025. If the application is successful, the project is scheduled to commence in mid-2027 with a maximum delivery timeframe of three years.
