Council Reminds Pet Owners Of Responsibilities

Griffith City Council is reminding pet owners of their responsibilities following an increase in community concern about barking dogs.

Dogs are an important part of many households and Council encourages owners to be mindful of how their dogs' behaviour may affect neighbours and the wider community. Excessive barking can cause distress if not appropriately managed.

Barking is a normal canine behaviour for dogs. It's how they communicate and not all barking is considered excessive. If dog barking is distressing you, please try and speak to the owners. The owners may not realise their dog is barking.

Residents experiencing ongoing issues with excessive barking are encouraged to contact Council on 1300 176 077 during business hours so the matter can be assessed and managed in line with legislation. Council's Compliance Officers can provide advice, investigate complaints and work with owners to achieve a positive outcome.

Under the NSW Companion Animals Act, dog owners are legally responsible for the care, control and behaviour of their animals. Council reminds residents that all dogs must be microchipped, registered and when in a Public Place must wear a collar with tag and be on a leash.
