With a heatwave forecast for next week, Council is taking proactive steps to help communities across the Shire stay safe and cool during the extreme temperatures.

As part of these measures, the Parkes Shire Library will be established as a designated cool area, providing an air-conditioned space and cold water for residents seeking respite from the heat. Trundle and Tullamore libraries are available 24 hours a day to members with access keys. Residents are encouraged to join if they wish to use these facilities next week – Trundle Library will be open for registration on Friday from 10 am, and Tullamore Library on Wednesday from 11 am. Please bring photo ID to register. Full details are available on Council's website: https://www.parkes.nsw.gov.au/Home.

To further support residents, free entry to the Parkes Pool will be available from this Sunday through to Friday, with Council covering the cost. Village pools will continue to offer free entry during this period.

Council will also provide Elvis misting fans at Australia Day celebrations, helping attendees stay cool while enjoying community events.

Councillor Bill Jayet, who initiated free pool entry during the 2018/19 drought, said:

"Providing free entry to the pools next week is a small but important initiative to help people stay cool and safe. I encourage everyone to take advantage of it."

Parkes Shire Council's Mayor Neil Westcott said:

"We want everyone in our community to stay safe and comfortable during the upcoming heatwave, and I applaud the Australia Day committee for moving the proceedings forward by an hour, with the official awards ceremony commencing at 10am, to help avoid the most intense heat."

Council encourages residents to take sensible precautions during hot weather, including staying hydrated, seeking air-conditioned or cool spaces, and checking on vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbours. Residents should also ensure pets and livestock are cared for, including providing shade and clean, cool water, avoiding walking dogs when ground temperatures are high, and taking extra care of elderly or young animals. People are also encouraged to make water available for wildlife during this time.
