Murrindindi Shire Council has secured $140,000 in VicHealth funding to deliver a new youth‑focused creative arts and active recreation program across the Shire, supporting healthier and more connected communities.
The two‑year program will work alongside young people and local organisations to co‑design activities that encourage creativity, physical activity and social connection, while making greater use of local community spaces and facilities bringing them to life for longer.
Cr Sue Carpenter, Council's Portfolio Councillor for Sustainable Population Growth and Land Use Planning, said supporting young people to feel connected to their local area was essential to building strong, thriving communities.
"When young people feel connected to their community and have opportunities to take part in local activities, it helps create places where people want to live, stay and belong," Cr Carpenter said.
"This funding allows us to strengthen local partnerships and create more opportunities for young people to connect, participate and thrive".
The funding will support the establishment of a new Community Development and Partnerships role, enhancing Council's capacity to build local partnerships, support community organisations and deliver inclusive, sustainable programs.
It will also support place‑based program delivery across local townships, including resources for equipment, transport and venue hire. Activities will be shaped through co‑design workshops with young people and community groups, ensuring programs are locally relevant and reflect community strengths and priorities.
By taking a collaborative and locally driven approach, the program aims to create lasting benefits for young people and families, supporting community connection and wellbeing beyond the life of the funding.
Updates on the program and opportunities to get involved will be shared through Council's website as planning progresses.
