This week's (21 Feb) Council meeting discussed support for developing palliative care facilities in Orange, and how to provide more storage space for the Orange Rural Fire Brigade. Here's a summary of key decisions.

Council discusses Working with Children checks for new councillors

Council has discussed a motion from Cr Steve Peterson calling for a change to induction processes for new councillors following the next local council election.

The motion asked for all newly-elected councillors to have compulsory 'Working with children' check as part of their induction process.

The motion was defeated after councillors suggested the change should be made through changing electoral law to require a check as part of the candidate nomination process.

Council to ask government for RFS facility

Tuesday night's meeting voted to write to the state government seeking funding for a new facility for the Orange Rural Fire Brigade.

The matter came up after a request from the Orange Rural Fire Service for council to give it sole use of the former rescue helicopter Base in Redmond Place.

Since 2019 the council-owned building has been used by a range of community groups including Rotary and Lions clubs and the Farmers Markets for storage.

The brigade had suggested community groups could use its current buildings, including a building in Margaret Street and sheds in Spring Hill and Clifton Grove.

Instead, the meeting decided to ask the NSW Government for funds to find a new facility for the brigade.

Tuesday night's council meeting voted to support efforts for expanded funding for palliative care services in Orange.

The meeting passed a motion unanimously supporting "the establishment of a Palliative Care Hospice in Orange" and listing the project as "an election priority in the lead up to the NSW Government election".

IN BREIF

Tuesday night's meeting decided to sponsor $1000 to City of Orange Veterans Golf Incorporated for the Central West Veterans Week of Golf Tournament, 5-10 March 2023.
