Council has resolved not to proceed with the proposed Memorial Garden at the corner of Burra Road and Old Cooma Road.
'After consultants completed extensive groundwater studies, we have discovered that the site will not be suitable for a Memorial Garden', Mayor Kenrick Winchester said.
'This site was purchased in 2017, and further studies commissioned into groundwater flow on the site has shown that without significant and expensive drainage solutions, burials are not going to be possible.'
'The required buffers around these drains reduce the usable burial space on the site to around 2.8ha, which just isn't enough space to be a long-term solution to burial requirements.'
'Council will be reviewing both the short- and long-term options for interment needs for our growing population. Council have asked staff to prepare reports around the options, including what additional works could be undertaken at the existing Lanyon Drive Cemetery to make available as much space as possible whilst we investigate new sites for a future Memorial Garden.'
'Council will also need to consider what to do with the land at the corner of Burra Road and Old Cooma Road, now that the Memorial Park will not proceed at this location.'
