Council Workshops Tailor Emergency Prep

As extreme weather events become more frequent, Logan City Council is encouraging seniors and residents with additional needs to improve their emergency preparedness through a series of free workshops.

The Person-Centred Emergency Planning (PCEP) workshops offer tailored support to help residents with significant health and support needs prepare for emergencies such as floods, storms and heatwaves.

Mayor Jon Raven said the workshops were particularly important for vulnerable people who could be at higher risk during evacuations or disasters.

"Disasters don't always affect everyone the same," Mayor Raven said.

"For many older residents, planning ahead can literally be life‑saving."

Mayor Raven said the workshops would help people stay safe and independent so they're not scrambling for critical medication or equipment or support when every minute counts.

"Evacuation centres are not designed to meet complex medical or care needs," Mayor Raven said.

"Without a plan, people can end up in hospital simply because they weren't prepared, putting stress on themselves and the health system."

Workshop participants will be supported to identify and document their individual needs, including medications, mobility aids, medical equipment and transport considerations, so they can make informed decisions during emergencies.

Planning focuses on practical considerations such as walking frames, hearing aids, CPAP machines and heart monitors, as well as medication management, mobility, transport limitations and the additional time some people need to evacuate safely.

Workshop sessions will be held at:

  • Logan West Library: Thursday 28 May and Thursday 11 June
  • Logan North Library: Friday 5 June and Friday 12 June
  • Beenleigh Library: Friday 19 June and Friday 26 June

Each workshop runs from 10am to 1pm and is delivered across two sessions to allow participants time to develop and refine their plans. A light lunch will be provided. Places are limited, to register visit: Person Centred Emergency Preparedness Workshops | Eventbrite
