A comprehensive inspection of Colac Otway Shire's 164 km footpath network will be carried out using quad bikes fitted with mounted cameras to capture detailed footage.

Infrastructure and Environment General Manager Doug McNeill said Council carried out inspections of the footpath network every four years.

"The data we get from this exercise helps us better manage our footpath network and plan effective maintenance and renewal strategies," he said.

"We will have quad bikes operating on our footpaths fitted with cameras to record the condition of our footpath network.

"We want to reassure people that the cameras are focused on the footpaths and capture limited views of adjacent areas. We are not taking any recordings of commercial or residential properties," Mr McNeill said.

"The quad bikes will be highly visible and operated by certified inspectors travelling at a brisk walking pace. They will be on the lookout to give pedestrian traffic the right of way wherever possible."

The inspection program will commence on Monday 29 June 2026.
